The Influence of Adolescent`s ADHD Symptoms on Executive Functions

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of adolescent`s ADHD symptoms on executive functions. The subjects were 450 middle school students in Seoul. They were assessed by The Conners-Wells¡¯ Adolescent Self-Report Scale(Short Form), The ADHD Rating Scale, and The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions-Self Report Version. The results were as follows: First, ADHD symptoms showed positive correlations with executive functions. Second, total score of ADHD symptoms had significant effects on total score of executive functions. Third, sub factors of ADHD symptoms that are cognitive problem, hyperactivity, conduct problem had effects on total score of executive functions, behavioral regulation index and metacognition index. Also, cognitive problem had larger effects than other sub factors. Fourth, sub types of ADHD symptoms that are inattentive and impulsive-hyperactivity had effects on total score of executive functions, behavioral regulation index and metacognition index. However, there was no significant difference of
effects between inattentive and impulsive-hyperactivity. This study figured out the cognitive features of ADHD by verifying the influence of adolescent`s ADHD symptoms on executive functions.
